Your commitment made it possible for us to realize a conference that was both strong on content and respectful of the cultural, social and political background of the member states of ASEM.

"The economy is becoming more cultural in nature, and the economic and social significance of creativity is growing".
Paul Rutten, independent expert on creative industries and research professor at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences.

Societies the world over are facing big challenges today. The economic crisis has left its mark on them. Population growth has put pressure on the quality of life, infrastructure and environmental quality of cities worldwide. But there is good news too. The global creative industries are actively helping to face these global challenges and to fuel economic competitiveness and innovation power.

We created a booklet that offers an impression of these Dutch creative industries. It looks at the origins of that industry, the role of government and the most important parties. It also spotlights creative entrepreneurs who are following in the footsteps of Dutch creative industries pioneers.

His Majesty King Willem-Alexander will officially open the 6th Asia Europe Culture Ministers Meeting (ASEM) by means of a speech on Monday 20 October. Then minister Jet Bussemaker of Education, Culture and Science will address an opening statement to the participants. The key note speech will be given by artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde. The opening ceremony will be concluded with a panel discussion.

This ASEM focuses on Creative Industries. The start of the 21st century has required Asia and Europe to employ development strategies to foster human creative potential to respond to the cultural, economic, social, and technological shifts taking place.

The ASEM Culture Ministers will use this 6th meeting to exchange experiences and discuss the benefits and challenges of creative industries.

The Rijksmuseum is one of the great national museums of the world. After ten years of rebuilding, renovation and restoration, the Rijksmuseum has opened its doors on 13 April 2013.

In a sequence of 80 galleries, 8,000 objects tell the story of 800 years of Dutch art and history.

Daan Roosegaarde, creative director of the social design lab Studio Roosegaarde, delivers unimaginable technology to the world – in the most literal way. With studio’s in Rotterdam and Shanghai, he develops innovative, interactive landscapes that are accomplished through the objective of pulling technology ‘out of the screen’ and integrating it into the real world.

The Dutch Design Week offers a vast programme including exhibitions, presentations, experiments, seminars, lectures and workshops.

Altogether, there are more than 1,800 design participants organizing around 300 events at 78 venues – all in one city: Eindhoven.

To emphasize the subject of the ASEM meeting and as a playful reference to the importance of the creative industry, The Minister of Education, Culture and Science of The Netherlands, Jet Bussemaker, has a special favour to ask of the ASEM invitees.

Could you send to the Netherlands (or bring with you) an example of a cup that represents the character and spirit of your country? The cup can be traditional or modern and designed by a designer from your country.

The Netherlands has sent all ASEM members a cup of the Unique Series by the Label Aleph, designed by Carola Zee.
Round, stained porcelain shapes are manipulated by pressing the thumb into the clay. This key feature in the design is not only functional, it also uniquely shapes each cup differently in the firing process.

Label Aleph focuses on the creation of exclusive contemporary design products.
